Rising social inequality is hurting the economy, democracy and society as a whole. Excessive differences in wealth and opportunity affect everyone. Although these inequalities are often presented as inevitable, they are actually the result of social choice. What are the public's values and priorities for action with respect to social inequality? What solutions exist?

To reflect on the answers to these questions, the Institut du Nouveau Monde launched the Rendez-vous stratégique sur les inégalités sociales (strategic meeting on social inequality), a vast dialogue between citizens and experts aimed at generating a clear social desire to reduce inequality. Over the past two years, the Institut du Nouveau Monde has published several accessible texts, organized numerous activities and consulted 5,000 citizens from across Quebec. Their position is clear: it's time to roll up our sleeves and get to work on this problem.

This work is a compilation of citizens' thoughts and scientific knowledge on the issue of social inequality in Quebec. Several myths are deconstructed, observations made and lessons drawn. Effective solutions are proposed. The status quo is costing us a great deal. We are at a crossroads: a global approach is the answer.

We believe
