ANDRÉ CHAGNON
After starting his own electrical contracting business in 1957, André
Chagnon established the regional cable television company Vidéotron
in 1964; under his leadership it grew to become the third largest
cable company in Canada. In 1986, the Vidéotron Group acquired
a majority of the voting rights in Télé-Métropole.
In 1988, the company set up operations in the United Kingdom, in the
London area, and subsequently penetrated the U.S. market in 1993.
André Chagnon and the Vidéotron Group won worldwide
recognition for their innovative thinking and particularly for the
Videoway multimedia system, which was marketed in Canada, the U.K.
and the U.S.A. In 1995, André Chagnon was named to the Information
Highway Advisory Council. He was also one of the four industrial leaders
invited by the Government of Canada to take part in the G-7 Ministerial
Conference on the Information Society, held in Brussels in 1995. The
Vidéotron Group was acquired by Quebecor Media in October 2000.
After a 37-year unprecedented career, André Chagnon decided,
in 2000, to devote his time and energy to setting up the Fondation
Lucie et André Chagnon.
